Quora, is a place to get answers to almost all
questions. From few months, I have been following it and answered few questions
there too.
Following is my answer to the question published on
Quora. The question is:
What are some lovely lines
that you have heard in Kannada songs?
Be it Sandalwood, Folk, or for that matter any song
with Kasturi fragrance!!!
I answered that question, and for some unknown
reasons, I couldn't stop myself to post the same on Blogger. Link to Quora answer is here:
'Copy' of it 'Paste'd below.
Q:
What are some lovely lines that you have heard in Kannada songs?

fragrance!!!
A:
I have been listening to Kannada music since 20+
years. There are many genres and many composers I love. I keep listening to
songs from G K Venkatesh, Hamsalekha to V Harikrishna, Gurukiran, Arjun Janya.
Many songs come and go, but this song, this one particular song, I just cannot
forget. 'Helkollok Ondooru' by G P Rajaratnam which is used in 'A' film. There
are many version and ragas in which this song is composed, but for unknown
reasons, I like the 'A' film version more.
Part of the song is as below:
The rough translation of the above part of the song
goes like this: After a long day of work at farm, then if I have a bite of home
prepared simple 'Raagi Mudde' and a tiny glass of ‘Huli Henda’, I don’t want
anything more.
Still from ‘A’ (1998)
The above lines accurately sum up work life of me
and everyone around. We always wake up late, rush to office in hurry, and then
come home tired only to have food from hotel nearby. We always work had to get
appreciation from boss, good grades, internal examinations etc, but we often
fail to learn life is not about dreaming big and making it real. It’s all about
living life to the fullest enjoying tiny pleasure moments. It may be a tiny
gift to your mother from your first salary, a first kiss from your love of your
life, a roadside coffee with old buddies etc. Yes, I agree we all need money to
survive and lead comfortable life, but beyond that we fail to enjoy little
pleasure moments in our life. That part is well explained in the above line.

This part of the song is written in spiritual
context. There’s a unpopular line in kannada film Paramathma, that is “Richness
is not earning more, spending more, richness is when you need no more”. This
part of the above song is the same context. Rough translation of above poetry
is as follows.
“Even if the God grants you what you pray for, or
may not ever give you, we are all like a tiny ant in this giant universe to
him. It’s our part to dance to his instructions”
A dialogue from Game of Thrones, will explain this
part of the song better. It is: “It doesn't matter what we want, once we get
it, then we want something else.”
That’s all about one song which stole my heart.
Sorry for the terrible ‘hoge’ translation,
suggestions/edits are welcome.
